The Unique “Breast Shrine”: Ushio Shrine

Located in Yunomae Town, Ushio Shrine is a highly unique and culturally fascinating Shinto shrine, affectionately known by locals as the “Oppai (Breast) Shrine.”

Here is what makes this shrine so special:

The Breast Shrine: The shrine is famous for its unique tradition where worshippers offer handmade, breast-shaped amulets or objects. Historically, women have visited this shrine to pray for a healthy supply of breast milk, safe childbirth, and good luck in raising children.

The Perfect Pair for Matchmaking: Ushio Shrine is considered a shrine for the “female deity.” Just nearby in the town, there is another shrine called Sai Shrine, which enshrines a “male deity.” It is a famous local custom that visiting both shrines as a set will bring you great blessings for a happy marriage and finding a good match (En-musubi)!

A Forest of Giant Cedars: The main shrine building is surrounded by massive cedar and camphor trees that are over 100 years old, giving the grounds a deeply mystical, quiet, and sacred atmosphere.

It is a wonderful place to experience a very local, deeply human side of Japanese folk religion!
