Cat Temple

Shozen-in Kannon-do

Located in Mizukami Village, Shozen-in Kannon-do is a Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property. Here is what makes it so incredibly special:

The “Cat Temple”: Shozen-in is affectionately known by locals as the “Cat Temple”. In fact, instead of the traditional guardian dogs (komainu), visitors are welcomed by rare “Koma-neko” (guardian cats)! You will find cat statues all around the temple grounds.

A Spooky Origin: The temple was built in 1625 by Sagara Nagatsune, the 20th head of the Sagara family. According to local legend, it was constructed to appease the vengeful spirits of a mother (Kuzetsu Zenjo) and her beloved cat, Tamatare. This was after her son, a monk at a different temple, was unjustly killed due to a samurai’s plot.

Architectural Contrast: Like the building in your drawing, Shozen-in has a beautiful thatched roof. However, while Shorenji’s interior is famously rustic and simple, Shozen-in features a surprisingly luxurious interior. The inside is beautifully finished with lacquer and decorated with gold leaf and vivid colors.

It is a fantastic place where history, architecture, and a real-life ghost story meet!
