Welcome to the Hitoyoshi-Kuma region, a place where untouched nature, traditional Japanese landscapes, and vibrant pop culture seamlessly blend together. If you are looking for an off-the-beaten-path experience in Kyushu, the Yunomae area is an absolute must-visit.
Yunomae Station: A Nostalgic Gateway

Your journey begins at Yunomae Station, the charming terminus of the Kumagawa Railroad. This retro, wooden station building feels like a step back in time. With its peaceful atmosphere and rustic design, it offers a perfect photo opportunity and sets the tone for a slow, relaxing day in the Japanese countryside.
Yunomae Manga Museum: Pop Culture Meets Tradition

Just a short walk from the station, you will discover a striking architectural marvel: the Yunomae Manga Museum. The contrast between the quiet rural landscape and this modern, unique building is truly fascinating.
Originally built to honor the works of local political cartoonist Ryosuke Nasu, the museum has evolved into a vibrant hub for manga and pop culture lovers. It regularly hosts special exhibitions and features a vast collection of comic books that visitors can read and enjoy.
A Sacred Spot for Anime Fans: “Natsume’s Book of Friends”

For anime enthusiasts, the Hitoyoshi-Kuma region holds a very special meaning. It is the real-world setting for the beloved anime masterpiece, “Natsume’s Book of Friends” (Natsume Yujin-cho).
Inside the museum facilities, you might find special displays dedicated to the series, such as an adorable shrine featuring “Nyanko Sensei.” Please note that these Natsume’s Book of Friends exhibits are special, limited-time events and are not on permanent display. We highly recommend checking the museum’s official website or schedule before your visit to see what’s currently on! Even outside the exhibition periods, fans from all over the world still visit this area for an “Anime Pilgrimage” (Seichi Junrei) to experience the beautiful, mystical landscapes depicted in the show.
